HEAR MY PRAYER
Hattie McDaniel died. She will be missed by family and friends. We owe her a great deal. Hattie lived 93 years, sober, a non-smoker and definitely not a drug abuser. A Christian, she raised five children and their grandchildren as well as so many that were not hers. Since long ago, she lived on a social security check.
On the day Hope returned home, Hattie figured out quickly her youngest daughter had become a drug addict. Hope’s other siblings in sharp contrast led Christian lives, active in community, one a teacher, another an insurance agent and two union auto workers. Hattie always said the devil is constantly on the prowl for our souls, and her children would be the most vulnerable. Hattie called Hope God’s special work in her life.
Her children and grandchildren were not the only ones who came for her cookies and other treats. Every child on her street and several others called her grandma Hattie. They knew her love was from a pure heart. She even loved the troublemakers.
Grandma had a degree in common sense—spare the rod and spoil the child. She knew things like cooking, sewing, fixing and making everything work. Smartness don’t come from schooling, it comes from doing what the Bible tells.
As Hattie’s enjoying her heaven reward, we’re praying for a new generation of caring grandmothers to save the children. We don’t need more broken families and social workers and bureaucrats. We need Hattie.
